Why Eat Clean?

A rich lady I know, always insists on putting premium, high octane fuel in her expensive car. She doesn’t want any gunk plugging up her engine, dragging it down, and causing her car to lag.  During a ladies group visit to the botanical gardens, she sat on a bench near the entrance, alone. Instead of continuing with the tour, I joined her. She told me she felt like her life had been hijacked. She can’t walk very far, even with the use of a cane. She can no longer get around on her own two feet. Debilitating aches and pains keep her housebound most days. Extremely overweight, she blames it on the inactivity caused by her ‘condition’. She’s been to the best medical doctors, in a wide range of specialties. Not one of them can cure the unidentified autoimmune disease they claim she has. And none of the medications they prescribe, ease any of her symptoms.

I’m not talking about an old, decrepit lady, but someone supposedly in their prime.  Despite her great wealth, her quality of life is diminished. And no amount of money can buy her a way out of it. 

After the botanical gardens, our group stopped for lunch. This rich lady ordered a greasy cheeseburger, French fries, and a diet soda. After stuffing herself full, she topped off her mid-day meal with apple pie, ice cream, plus coffee with cream and sugar. I couldn’t help but pose the question.

Did she ever stop to think that the low quality fuel she was putting in her body was the root cause of its inability to function properly? Like a car trying to run on bad gas, she was clogging up her ‘engine’, slowing down her system, and causing it to run slower.

She told me that was nonsense. To this day, she’s never made the connection. And truly has no clue that her high calorie diet, devoid of nutrients but loaded with unhealthy fats, refined sugars, and empty carbohydrates is not providing her body with what it needs to run smoothly. Unlike her fancy car, her body isn’t performing well because it isn’t running on clean, high-end fuel. In fact, it’s starting to break down.

So, you get my point, right? We truly are what we eat. And about a third of us are digging our graves with our own forks. 30.6% of Americans are clinically obese. Not just overweight, but grossly overweight…obese.  This translates to insulin resistance, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Left untreated, these conditions lead to fatty liver, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

You’ll be amazed at how much energy you have and how great you feel when you spend the extra money for premium fuel for your body. Clean, organic, whole foods are the best investment you can ever make. An investment in yourself and your good health. You don’t realize how important good health is until it’s gone. No one dreams of getting older and spending the last of their life in and out of doctors offices and hospitals, subsisting on handfuls of prescription pills, never feeling well enough to truly enjoy themselves. No matter the quantity, we all want quality of life.

You are the only one that can prevent this by breaking the cycle. Truly love yourself by fueling your body with things that are good for it.  Think about everything you put in your mouth and what it’s doing for you verses what it might be doing to you. Don’t ask why clean, organic whole foods are so expensive. Ask why fast food and junk food are so cheap.

Clean Eating Made Easy

Traditionally, clean eating is part of an elimination diet. A total elimination diet is most commonly used by Doctors of Naturopathy. It eliminates potential ‘problem foods’ from your diet, for a short period of time. You then reintroduce each potential ‘problem food’, one food group at a time, every 3 days. Because it can take up to 72 hours, for a food reaction to show up. You then gauge whether or not you have a reaction to each food you reintroduce.

You may not even relate what you eat to a food reaction. Because problem foods cause typical ailments like achy joints, coughing, sinus problems, rashes, headaches, stomach aches, etc. Often, we fail to connect common symptoms to what we’re eating. Like my friend, you may be so used to living with these conditions, they have become your ‘normal’ state of being. You no longer realize, what being truly healthy feels like.


  1. Eliminating dairy products relieves or eliminates allergy and sinus problems. Reintroducing dairy into the diet causes excess mucus production which in turn causes congestion, nasal stuffiness, sinus problems, etc.
  2. Eliminating gluten relieves or eliminates problems like leaky gut syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome. Reintroducing gluten into the diet aggravates these conditions.
  3. Eliminating all other grains relieves or eliminates problems with inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia. Reintroducing whole grains and refined grains into the diet causes achy joints, joint pain, swelling, etc.
  4. Eliminating highly processed foods, low in nutrition but high in GMOs, refined sugar, unhealthy fats, and empty carbohydrates relieves or eliminates problems with sluggishness, mental fog, and a lack of energy. Clean eating makes the body feel energized and alive.

Clean eating helps shed unwanted pounds, naturally. In turn, once you are lighter, your lifestyle becomes more active. Clean eating, especially over time, may help lower blood sugar, blood cholesterol, and blood pressure. Sometimes, this positive change in diet, plus a little exercise is all people need to be in a position to work with their physician to eliminate prescription medications for these conditions.
